    Rinse and thoroughly drain the black beans. In a large mixing bowl, coarsely mash the beans with a fork or potato masher, leaving some texture for a better burger consistency.

    Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped yellow onion, minced garlic, and diced red bell pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.

    Transfer the sautéed vegetables to the bowl with the mashed black beans. Add the breadcrumbs, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together thoroughly until the mixture is well combined and can hold its shape when pressed.

    Divide the black bean mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a firm, round patty, approximately 3/4 inch thick.

    Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil in the same skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the black bean patties into the hot skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and heated through.
